iPad 3 is rumored to be announced sometime early March and could be available for purchases later that month. Majority of people who already own iPad or iPad 2 will consider buying the next generation of iPad when released sometime next month. Most of these iPad owners will not even think about selling their older generation iPads after purchasing the new iPad 3. Their iPad will go back into storage or will be around the house not being put to good use because all the family members want to play with the new iPad 3.
But, there are smart consumers who will consider selling their older generation iPads on craigslist or ebay. With the money they get from their older iPads plus additional money they saved up, they will use it to buy a new iPad 3. If you are one of these smart consumers, then you must act now to get most money for your iPad. For example, when iPhone 4S came out last year, the price of iPhone 4 and iPhone 3 dropped instantly. You would have received about 25% more if you had sold your iPhone 4 or 3 prior to the announcement of iPhone 4S. My prediction for iPad 3 is very similar. You could get about 25% more on your iPad 2 if you sell it now prior to the release of iPad 3 in March. If you wait too long, you could lose as much as $100-$125 on your older generation of iPads.
I would highly recommend selling your iPad 2 within next week if you are seriously considering iPad 3 mainly for two reasons. You will not use iPad 2 that much after you get hold of iPad 3 and you will not have to pay the full price of iPad 3. What do you plan to do with your iPad 2?
- Sell now before you buy iPad 3
- Sell later after you buy iPad 3
- Keep iPad 2 and still buy iPad 3?

I want one. Never owned an iPad and I’m sure this generation will be worth the wait, especially if they maintain the same price.
I love my iPad – it is 2; and I intent to keep it. Resisting the temptation of gadgets is something I had to work on very hard.
I have the original iPad and I’ll definitely be upgrading to the 3. I haven’t decided whether to sell my original (it would cover about half the cost of the new one) or keep it for my son to use. It’s a tough decision!
This is exactly right (and timely!)
There’s a whole post about how prices are cratering for iPad 2 because of iPad 3 rumors. Here’s the data + charts that back up what you’re saying!

I actually wrote about this at one of my blogs today, but from a different perspective. If you are looking to save some money, and can be happy with the iPad 2, there are some excellent discounts in the run up to the iPad 3s release.
